Say again...

I just got this message from Blogger. I don't know if I am just punchy from all the kids in my house, or if I read more into this than intended. Whatever the case, I got a good giggle.

Here is the official message:

Parenting Quiz

Please read carefully the question below. Using a number 2 pencil only, darken the circle that most represents your answer.

1. What would you do if your oldest child asks if he can smell your bottom?
  • Turn around flabbergasted while ranting and raving about how gross and inappropriate that question was.
  • Use this as a learning opportunity to explain the functions of the nose and the bottom and why we don't need to smell them like dogs do.
  • Call older boy cousin immediately and insist that he never teaches your child anything. EVER. AGAIN.
  • Call a babysitter and get out of the house alone because you "need time to think" of the answer.
  • Pray with all your might that he will turn out to be a productive member of society, someday.
  • or, walk faster and pretend you didn't hear the question.

Good Ole' Beauty Parlor Revival

I just spent 3 glorious hours in the Church of Hair and Makeup, sans kids. Cue organ music....HALLELUJAH. I feel refreshed, uplifted, encouraged and even revived. It's funny how a little pampering can boost your spirits.

My hairdresser is an awesome gal. She is truthful and funny and she loves Jesus. I really felt like we worshipped together in between the "squeezing and teasing" of my hair. "Reverend" Crystal was preachin' today. Her sermonettes so reflected my life and struggles at the moment. I feel compelled to share her wisdom in light of my own life.

It was that good.

"I always strive to tell the truth and be completely honest with myself and others." When I sat down in her chair, she looked at my hair and said, "Girl, it looks bad." O.U.C.H. From anyone else I would have defended my haggardly locks, but I knew her honesty is what I needed. I respect her point of view. I value her feedback. I look for honesty in others as a top priority. I love it when people are transparent. I strive to have genuine relationships with others who are not afraid to be bold and tell the truth. Whether you are struggling or praising don't be afraid to tell the truth. Some may view this kind of honesty as a weakness, but I see it as a strength. So many times I think we try to hide behind an invisible wall and not let others see us. That may be necessary in some relationships, but I pray that all of you have someone in your life you can be completely honest with. I know I would be miserable if I didn't have it in mine. (go on girl!)

"Two inches to a better you." I went in today with the full intent of cutting off two inches of hair. Boy, did I need it. It is funny how cutting off the bad stuff really puts a spring in your step. That is exactly what God strives to do in our lives. I sure have a lot of "dead ends" that I have been walking around with. I need to trim off the unhealthy attitudes and practices that I have allowed to grow. Pride, selfishness, LAZINESS, judgements, criticism, doubt, fear...you name it, I have it. All of us do. I want to take two inches off and see what God is growing underneath. (Are you with me?)

"The God I serve doesn't require time limits." This one hit me hard, right between the eyes. I realize that I have been wanting God to work within my time parameters. Two days for this, five months for that. GO! GO! GO! Can we move faster here, Lord? Slower, Lord. The God I love can move in an instant. His timetable is perfect. I have to trust that more. I may be missing what He has for me during the wait. (Mmmmm Hmmmmm)

"God is not done with you until you are dead." I have situations in my life that I think will never change. But as long as I am breathing, He is working. (you know it!)

"If God put any sense in your head, you will use it." We were sharing about spiritual gifts and how they are from the Lord and need to always be used for Him. Oh, but the "enemy" loves to tempts us to use those gifts for our own glory. For example, I was sharing with her that I think I have the gift of mercy/compassion. When I let God show me how to direct this gift, it is very beneficial. But the flip-side of this is martyrdom. If I am too busy helping and fussing over everyone else, but won't allow anyone to help me then I have used it wrong. I have taken what God has naturally blessed me with and used it for my own gain or glory. The same could be said about any gift. She shared that hers was discernment, but gone too far leads to a critical spirit. She finds it easy to judge and criticize all under the "umbrella" of the discernment. Whatever God gives you, give it back and use it only for Him. (Preach it, sister.)

"If you say you love someone, then show it." Make it a priority to show those you love how much they mean to you. Find the ways they receive love and follow through. Don't just assume that they know, show it. Honestly care for them. (I'm listening)

"Painted toes are so much prettier than ugly naked ones." Can I get an AMEN? She really is a wise girl.

By the way, the hair feels great and healthy. Thanks, Rev.

Sending out an S.O.S.

Before having babies, I was the best mom. My imaginary children always behaved properly. They were never dirty. They always had the best clothes. They cleaned their plates and ate their vegetables. They put others first and cared for their friends. They never fought, whined or complained.

I imagined that I would always have ample time to myself while the children played together. In my dreams of motherhood, I was always calm and patient. My hair and makeup were always applied. Dinner was always prepared for my family and we sat down at every imaginary meal together. We talked and played games well into the evening. Then they would snuggle in their own beds freshly bathed with teeth scrubbed. And fall asleep instantly without the demands for drinks or bedtime snacks.

Never once in my idyllic motherhood bliss, did our precious babies end up sleeping in our bed. They slept peacefully through the night and woke up refreshed and ready to obey the next morning.

I had all the answers (and then some) BEFORE having children.

Reality is, I am at a complete loss trying to raise the two kids that we have been blessed with. It is a whole lot harder than I ever imagined. Sometimes we need to ask for help from our friends that have travelled the road before us. So, to all the trailblazers out there reading this, please hear my S.O.S. before we completely lose our minds.

We are heavily entrenched in the battle of the bed with Loulabelle. Somewhere in the middle of the night (probably when we are too tired to put up a good fight) she will crawl in between us. Often times she replaces Skip and he goes to sleep in her empty bed. This new behavior started recently, but is now becoming a nightly problem. I don't know what triggered her to start coming to our room. As sweet as she is, I don't want her in our bed. I love snuggle time, but not at the expense of having Skip move to another bedroom. Or, at the expense of tears and loss of sleep. I know we need to be tougher and more consistent with this. But I don't even know where to start.

My pre-motherhood self would have known how to handle this. Please take this S.O.S. and handle it with care. I would love to know how some of you solved this problem with your children.

Because our only option at this point is to charge her rent. I am not joking. We have thought of that.

HELP.

Free stuff = good!

I won something...and so did 99 other bloggers! Gotta say, I am pretty darn excited about it. I love worship music. But F.R.E.E. worship music gives me goosebumps! You gotta check out this group. They are really, really good. Don't tell them, but I would have paid $ to have this in my collection. But let's just keep that between the two of us.

Just another random tidbit of useless information.

I am dry. My brain has shriveled up and dried into a little brain raisin.

I don't have anything between my ears anymore. Or at least not for the last couple days. I've even tried to do math in my head just for to see if my brain was tracking.

It wasn't.

I need to reboot my system and start fresh tomorrow.

Honestly, was this even worth spending 5 minutes to type? Or 1 minute to read?

Hardly. Good night!

Rollercoasters

My breath left me.
My stomach was full of butterflies.
My mind was full of doubt.
My mouth was dry.
My palms were sweaty.
"Hold on tight!" I screamed.
"Father, please protect him", I whispered.
My heart leaped out of my chest.
My eyes didn't stray.
His resolve didn't waver.
His daddy believed and teased.
His smile lit up the world.
His laugh melted the dark place called fear that resides in secret.
His joy was contagious.
He wants more.

13 Restaurants I Like, plus What I Order:

Alana posted a meme on her blog about her 5 favorite restaurants. She shared her favorite places plus the memories behind her favs. I am going to change it up a bit since it's Thursday. And raining. And I feel like it.

Because most of my favorite places are your run-of-the-mill food chains (and that doesn't make for an interesting story) I am including my food recommendations. I am not a daring restaurant eater. Once I find something I like, I order it every time. Every time. With little or no variation.

To quote a good friend, "I like what I like."

Olive Garden: Chicken Marsala with extra goo and oven roasted potatoes.

Red Lobster: Coconut Shrimp with garden salad and TONS of cheddar biscuits.

"Local Hillbilly" Dairy Land: Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger basket with REAL cherry coke. Don't go without cash cuz they don't take credit cards. Also, don't go with 6 adults and 12 kids. People have been known to stare.

"Local" BBQ: This is a hole in the wall, but the BBQ is supreme. BBQ Pork Nachos

Uncle Julio's: Start with queso (duh!)and dip their handmade tortillas. Then complete with Chicken Fajitas and extra guacamole. Our favorite one is in Ft. Worth (actually it is the only one we've tried!)

La Madeleine: Caesar Salad and Tomato Basil soup (actually, they are French. They call it Salade and Soupe.) Top it off with Strawberries Romanoff. You are very welcome.

Applebees: Quesadilla Burger. This is a new and daring try for me. It is sloppy good.

Shorty Small's: THE CHAD! It's not on the menu, but if you ask for the cook named Chad he can prepare it. Beware.

McDonald's: $1 Double Cheeseburger made like a Big Mac, loads of salty fries and a big Coke.

Nakato's Japanese Steakhouse: Hibachi grilled shrimp, extra veggies, steamed rice, and lots of shrimp sauce. Lots of fun memories at this place.

Dale's Donuts: Kolaches and ice cold chocolate milk.

Grand Lux Cafe: Patty Melt is TO DIE FOR! Lots of thousand island dressing to dip your huge melt in. YUM!

Bob Evans: Blue Cheese, Walnut salad. Very good if you are a blue cheese lover. Plus the coffee is smooth and it keeps on coming.

Happy Eating! Maybe we can dine together soon.

The Power to FREEZE pt. 2

About a week ago, I wrote about Superhero powers. I made the case for the power to FREEZE time. I had another moment today that I wish I could freeze forever.

This afternoon we headed to my Grannie and Gramps's house. Grannie had knee replacement two weeks ago and came home from the hospital yesterday. You wouldn't believe it if I told you she is 81 years old. The surgery took 10 years off her face. For the last 10 years she has lived in pain...mostly constant for the past two. She is doing a fabulous job of pushing through rehab and will heal quickly. I am so proud of her "never quit" attitude.

While we were there, Z found a soft baseball to play catch with. The mommy in me said, "No balls in Grannie's house." My Gramps had a different idea. He started calling Z his "Lil Fielder" and wanted to play catch. Gramps has been legally blind for many years and his mobility is weak, at best. I worried that he might have been living in the past when he suggested that they play.

But he insisted. So they played catch. In the living room. Filled with BREAKABLES. Many breakables.

It was the sweetest thing to watch. I saw my shy, reserved Gramps giggle with glee. He hooted and hollered. They played for almost an hour. I was so blessed to watch their interaction. Sadly, my kids are standoffish with Gramps; probably due to his age, wrinkles, walker, crooked fingers.

But today, they played.

They played like I played with my Gramps many years ago. I loved spending summers in Nebraska visiting them. Back in the day, Gramps was extremely active. He would tinker in the garden, take long walks and bike rides. I loved the times when he and I would get on our bikes and ride through their small town. Stopping halfway at the A&W for an ice cream treat. I loved helping him trim bushes, wash the dog, and piddle 'round the house.

Today, I saw the Gramps of my youth playing with my son. And I want to FREEZE this memory forever.

It was almost ruined over $5.75.

Last night, we enjoyed a fun time with our Supper Club at a local minor league game. We ate at Chipotle's (thanks, Dawn for the recommendation). Stuffed our faces with a big, fat burrito and headed to the game.

The weather was perfect, albeit a little on the warm side. I immediately started to burn up wearing my denim capris. Technically, they are 4 inches away from being jeans...what was I thinking? Who wears jeans on a 90 degree day? Anyway, the evening was a typical summer evening. Stifling, with a mild to rare chance of breeze.

I was hot. I was trying really hard not to complain because I wanted to enjoy the moment of sitting with friends and watching the kids play.

Somewhere along, the minute we sat down, the kids started begging for food. I managed to hold them off until the 5th inning. At which time I proceeded to buy 2 snow cones and a bag of Kettle Korn. As I was delivering the snow cones, I asked my beloved if he would like a bottle of water. He said..."No, I am fine." (remember that)

I wasn't. I had been eyeing the ginormous soda that Shelley was drinking. Not to mention, I was HOT. And SWEATY. I went to the stand to buy my Coke. They had 3 choices at the stand.

Tiny for $1.50
Plastic cup with NO refills for $3.25
Bigger-than-one-human-can-drink for $5.75 plus 1 free refill.

I chose the bigger than life sized Coke. I knew my kids would help suck it down and then I could get a free refill. Once I walked back to my seat, Skip eyed my drink. The drink that took both hands and good balance to hold.

What happened next was NOT pretty. You could have cut the tension with a knife. Why did I buy a drink that he doesn't drink? Why did I spend FIVE dollars on that? Why did I not buy water that we could all share?

HOLD THE PHONE.

Did I not ask if I could buy him a water? Did he not say, "No" to that request? I was fully prepared to buy the water and the coke. Needless to say, this was almost a deal-breaker, folks. This was almost the straw that broke the camel's back. I say almost because in the midst of our tension, I tried to slam my giant drink in the stadium cup holder. It didn't fit. I sheepishly looked at him and we burst out laughing.

If there was one thing that I love most about our marriage is our ability to laugh. Laughter has provided the backdrop for our life together. He is my best friend and I am his. We can laugh at ourselves. We can laugh at our circumstances. We can laugh at our mistakes.

We can laugh when our BIGGER THAN LIFE cup is half full. Even if it costs a whooping $5.75.

Another one bites the dust.

Well, lookie here folks. Dawn has a blog.

Check for signs of addiction:
--laundry piled up
--dishes piled high in the sink
--showers every other day
--kids left to feed themselves
--beds go unmade
--can't talk on the phone because she is busy typing
--blood shot eyes due to lack of sleep
--husband left to feed himself
--blog-able moments are everywhere in your mundane day

Don't know about you, but I will be a faithful reader.

Come out, come out wherever you are

Come out, come out wherever you are. I have several friends that I would love to see start a blog. My blog life would be greatly enhanced if you all would join in the fun. Although, my marital life might suffer the consequences of time spent reading all these new blogs. But don't let that stop any of you.

Pam...you are close. You can do it! I know you are thinking that you don't have anything to say, but you are filled with humor, wisdom, insight and thoughtfulness. You would be such an encouragement to mommies in my stage because you have "been there and done that." You have learned what battles to pick and which to let go. You have learned how to savor the moments with your children. You have challanged me to be a better mom. With truth and sweetness blended in, your blog would be amazing.

Shelly L...you have a title. What's ya waiting for? Your stories about life with boys and pets keep me cracked up. You have a knack for seeing the fun side of life. You laugh and play right along side your kids...so I know you have material. Your first post could be about Brandon's broken arm. You even have a creepy picture to post with it. You would help us all relax and have fun with our kids.

Carissa...you have started before (twice, I think.) I know Lurky Lurkerson worries you, but your friends would help fight him off. Your blog would be an instant hit. Your humor and outlook on life is what draws people to you. The world, and me, need more of you. I would love to hear about your trips, your nephew, your books, your stories, your lessons learned. Your life is rich and its time to share it with your fans. I know I could visit you, but really. You don't want my kids in your pretty house. Total. Destruction. Lies. Ahead.

Sonja...I hope you are reading this. You know I love your wisdom and advice. As your neighbor and exercise partner, I know how great you are. Life with 3 active boys has blog material written ALL over it. They keep you hopping, I know because I have barely seen you this summer. I would love to hear all about your trips, your parties, your bargain shopping and your stationary collection. Watching you mother has helped shape who I am today. You have taught me how to relax and not worry about the little things. I love your wisdom and truth. Please consider it...I would be hooked for sure.

Dawn...you are a reader of many but a writer of none. It is time. You are a Southern girly-girl raising 3 boys. And that just screams blog. You would keep us in stitches with your advice and philosophy of raising kids. Plus, your good ole Bible wisdom and accountability keeps me in check. You would rival the B Mama's in wit, advice, recipes, and Southern charm. They would be hooked on you...maybe then we could meet them! Start the "Fun Family" blog today! Your first post could be your Banana Bread recipe. Was that supposed to be for Skip? I really haven't let him near it. It ain't no ordinary Banana Bread. It is buttery-bananay-cinnamon-sugary goodness straight from Heaven.

Amber...you are the busiest woman I know. Raising 2 girls and teaching full time, not to mention married to the coolest world traveller. I don't know how you do it. With your English degree and ability to place commas in the right spot you would put us all to shame. WOW...the blogs you could write. I would love to hear about raising an adopted daughter and the ups and downs of living with the drama queens. I sure had fun writing about them. Life with your girlies is NEVER dull. Not to mention (and never to be blogged about--hee hee) are our adventures. Late HS and early college years would have been the stuff that blogs are made for. I know you don't have a minute to spare, but I would love to hear more about your daily life as a working mommy. I can't get enough of you!

Rhonda...I love that you are reading this. I also miss you like crazy. You definately need to be in blog land. Raising and homeschooling 3 busy kids. You are an inspiration to me who is lazy. You must share yourself with the world wide web. They would be as delighted to know you as I have been my whole life. I drive by your old house(which is an empty lot now) and smile. We had good times. Your ups and downs in this mommyhood thing would be an inspiring read. Please join me.

Tod...don't even think about it. People need to experience you live and in full color. You are too vibrant and insightful for the boring computer. Crank up the volume and here we go! Raise the roof. Tod's in the house.

Skip...I know this is a pipe dream. But, just think. If you had your own blog, we could be like Rich and Alana and flirt in the comment section. You could leave witty, insightful remarks on my blog and I could leave little love messages on yours. It would be like cyber-dating. That would be fun, wouldn't it? Your perspective on our life would be an interesting addition to mine. I would love to hear just what is going on in that handsome head of yours. Then again, maybe we should just keep it in there. We might lose my PG rating and maybe a few friends. HA! You know I love you bunches and bunches. I might not be willing to share you...I wouldn't want our friends to be jealous of what I got.

The best 5th of July ever.

Fourth of July has come and gone in a flood. We had several good moments that evening sitting by the pool and eating pizza. Off in the distance the gray clouds loomed. Still we swam. Still we ate.

Bring on the lightning and thunder. Bring on the rain...torrential rain.

Cancel fireworks (not that I was sad...but the kids were).

Wake up on the 5th to bright sunny skies. Had a terrific day watching Alana's boys and swimming with Jen. It was great spending this summer day playing without worrying about time, laundry, dishes, cleaning. Just playing. It was good. It was summer.

Listening to a house full of kids was pure delight. They laughed and giggled. They told great stories. They had lively discussions. Here are some of our quotable moments.

"When your mom is mad, she is not funny."
"Do you have a special recipe for grilled cheese?"
"I'm not tiwed."
"We are brothers by different mothers."
"Popcorn. Popcorn. I love popcorn!"
"Popcorn is not a snack, it's a vegetable."

As you can tell, I had me some laughs. Debating the snack-worthiness of popcorn, with a six year old, made my day!

Later in the evening we went to Tod and Pam's for swimming and the burning of explosives. Because you know the evening would not be complete without the screaming pain of watching 976 bottle rockets explode. We had a blast playing in the water and eating yummy food. Having 4 kids to watch in the pool was really quite the challenge, but I survived and even got my hair wet to prove it.

Sometime in the middle of the evening I looked up to the sky. God had painted the most beautiful sunset that far surpassed any man-made fireworks. It was as if He boldly proclaimed that He is the Master. He is the painter. He is the One and Only. It literally took my breath away. I needed that reminder. I needed Him to say, "Janelle look at Me and take notice. I make all things beautiful."

It really was the best 5th of July ever.

13 Ways to Say "I'm Sorry."

Please forgive me.
I shouldn't have done that.
My bad.
What was I thinking?
I feel awful for...
I really messed up.
I will try harder next time.
I care too much about you to let this come between us.
I'm a jerk.
Help me understand what you are saying.
Oops, I did it again.
I should know better.
Are we OK?

Skip, I'm sorry for not treating you with respect tonight. Please forgive me.

PG Rated

In case any of you are wondering why I am rating my blog...well, I just found out that TAG (the coolest dude ever) is a reader. And so is my mom. I just want to make sure my fan-base (Ha!)knows that sometimes I may say or do something that needs Parental Guidance control. I mean I have the word "snot" in my title. What do you expect?

I know there have been several times or posts that I have thought twice about, but did it anyway. For example:

I referred to the "Man Zone" here.

I showed you my boobs here (scroll down)--very PG 13.

I may have completely grossed you out here.

I used inappropriate symbols here.

and, I may have SERIOUSLY crossed the line here.

My main hope is that I haven't offended anyone. This is who I am...often speaking and acting without even thinking. Which means I later go back and apologize for saying things I shouldn't. Sometimes I am too honest, too real, too transparent. But I am, me! I hope this blog will reflect my life, my marriage, my parenting, my frustrations, my joys. I hope it will reflect who I am. Even if I have to get a little PG with it.

I hope you will stick around! Even you, TAG...but check with your mom first!

Thought for the Day

Just when you start to brag about something going well...all *&%$ breaks loose.

(excuse my profane use of symbols--entirely inappropriate)

The Power to FREEZE

If only I was a Superhero. I would want my superpower to be the ability to FREEZE time (either that or elastic arms...Mrs. Incredible sure made that look good.) I can see the power to freeze time working to my advantage in both good and bad times.

For example, the last hour is one that I would freeze to last forever. I know I could take a picture of it; but a picture would not do this moment justice. It would not describe the peace I feel right now.

Both kids are playing independently...in the living room so I still get to enjoy them. Dinner is in the oven prepared in advance for a hectic night. Beds are made...which is really an act of God. Dishes are done. Laundry is getting caught up.

I love this moment. I know it is fleeting, but it is times like this that get me through the harder ones to come.

SO, FREEZE! What's going on right now at your house? I would love to know.

Blog Trouble

Try as I may, I can't get my picture to resize. I must have too many widgets, or something.

The beauty of the pic being so HUGE is that you can actually see snot under Loulabelle's nose.

Snot and Kisses...and everything in between! The joys of motherhood at it's finest.

The Reluctant Fairy

Humans are not made to accept fairy responsibilities. Humans are forgetful, fairies should never forget. Fairies are perfect, and let's face it, we mortal humans are not. I think you see where I am going with this. We had a close call between humanism and fairyism.

Without any pomp and circumstance or pictures to prove it, Z lost a tooth last night. His first tooth was the highly coveted photographic milestone. We took over 50 pictures of the journey to tooth freedom. His second, we took about 20.

His third. Zero. Na da. Zip. In fact, he pulled it himself. Then Lou dropped it. Thankfully, we found it under the chair cushion. Already this tooth was doomed for failure and forgetfulness. We did the obligatory under the pillow thing and pretended excitement. But...out of sight, out of mind. It was quickly forgotten.

Before having kids (or fairy responsibilities) we used to make fun of our brother-in-law who was caught making change over a "sleeping" daughter. She peeped her eyes open to see her daddy counting coins to put under her pillow. Now we all know that we are much better parents BEFORE we actually have kids. I swore to never be that lame. I swore to uphold my fairy responsibilities with the utmost respect and awe.

So, back to this morning. Skip woke up with a start at 7:17 this morning. "Did you remember to put a dollar under Z's pillow?" Oh no! Now we are both up frantically looking for a dollar. None to be found.

Lots of panic and gnashing teeth ensued while we looked for 4 quarters. Surely, we have 4 quarters lying around. Time is not on our side right now...he could already be awake in his bed. He could already be disappointed. He could already be sad...

Aha! We now have the right amount and Skip with his "cat-like reflexes" hurries to Z's room. With all grace and skill, he slides his hand under the pillow and swiftly trades the tooth for the quarters. (I have the Chariots of Fire theme song playing in my head...also picturing Skip running in slow motion towards Z's room).

We were just in time. He was still sleeping, but woke up to see us both smiling over him. We told him we just wanted to see THE VERY MINUTE he woke up and found his treasure from the Tooth Fairy. His little hand revealed 4 shiny quarters. I think we pulled it off.

This time.

In addendum, we have come clean with Z about the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy. He heard the playground talk about these fairies not being real. We have told him the truth, but also threatened him with the loss of these goodies if he spoils it for your kids. So far he hasn't asked about Santa and we haven't brought it up.

Firecrackers are a man's best friend.

There is something so caveman-esque about firecrackers. Last night at a birthday party we watched men of all ages delight themselves in the noise, smoke and bang. Something primal took hold of all these men...grown and baby.

MUST GO TOWARD THE LIGHT...
OOOOHHHH, SMOKE....
ME LIKE BANG....
FIRE...GOOD.

Needless to say, there was lots of grunting, scratching and drooling to go along with it. Men are wired to love firecrackers.
