Summer would not be complete until we hit the road. This year we decided to do an extended road trip starting in Ft. Worth and ending in Hot Springs. We loaded up the family and set off for maximum togetherness. Some was good...some was not. Here are the highlights complete with pictures and embarrassing moments. Our family trip would not be the same without some major humiliation (but you will have to wait until the end, folks!)
First stop, Ft. Worth. Skip and I lived in Texas for 5 years (not long enough to qualify saying "ya'll", but long enough for us.) We graduated from TCU and thought it would be fun to show the kids our alma mater. Hindsight is 20/20 in this case. They did not appreciate the froggie tour. In fact, it was awful! The kids had a hard time understanding how important this was to Skip and I. They didn't care to see where we slept, ate or played tag football ten plus years ago. They only cared about food, shade, water, gum, swimming, drinks, snacks, TV, mud, etc. We did manage to get a few pictures here and there.
Next stop, Hot Springs. The real reason for the trip. My step-dad (aka, PA) is a professional bass fisherman. This week was the FLW tournament with the pot of $2 million dollars. Now that is a reason to start fishing! The tournament was a four day event with 81 of the best anglers in the US. Two days, all 81 anglers compete. Then they narrow the field down to just the top 10. Pretty tough competition.
After day 1, Pa had 7lbs worth of bass. Not bad, but is it enough to keep going?
My kids are crazy in love with their Pa. I think it goes both ways. Unfortunately, he did not catch enough in 2 days to compete on Saturday and Sunday. He finished in 42nd place and we are so proud! Fishing is harder than it looks. I certainly couldn't wake up at 4:00am and fish in the HOT sun for 10 hours only to catch 5 fish. Not a chance! Pa makes it look easy and the cool thing is that he is teaching Z how to fish.
Our accommodations in Hot Springs couldn't be better. We rented a 2 bedroom condo so we have LOTS of room to run around. No sleeping in one bed here! Our days have been filled with major relaxation and family fun. We sleep in, play games, watch movies, take naps and blog. It is perfect! Most days we get out of the condo and go play in this fun town. One day we went back to the FLW tournament trade show where they have a "Family Fun Zone." Z had been wanting to climb a 40 foot rock wall sponsored by the National Guard. Being the fun mom that I am, I decided to climb with him. YEAH, RIGHT! I was FORCED by a Guardsman. As he was putting the harness on me, he laughed. It was pure evil! What I wouldn't do for some Mommy Love. I almost made it to the top...it hurt so bad!
Warning: Objects in picture are really smaller ( I hope) than they appear!

Sounds like so much fun!
Are you home now?
Love the PA-parazzi...cute!
Can't wait to see you!
What a funny chronicle of the family vacation--highs and lows--I completely empathize. My three Star Wars fans would be so thrilled to visit the SW museum. I'll have to put that one in my list of must sees in my lifetime.
Hooray for summer vacation!!! The pictures of the kids are adorable, you would never know they had to have a "talk" with daddy. They are too cute for that.
Way to be a the funnest mom ever on the rock climbing wall.
Glad you're home! Missed you bunches.
I'm taking notes on how to have a great vacation, looks like have two bedrooms is at the top!
I must admit that is the least flattering picture I think I've ever seen in my life! That's hilarious!!!! I would avoid sending that one out in Christmas cards this year!
It sounds like a blast!
While I think you look perfectly thin, I don't believe anyone's backside would look attractive in a harness...
:-)
Glad you're back!
Through all of the ups and downs of family vacation Z is going to remember how great it was that Mommy climbed the rock wall with him. You are a great mom! :)
That is so fascinating about Z being angry and confused about the "real thing" at the Star Wars exhibit.
Sounds like you guys had a blast (at least some of the time). I'll remember not to take my kids to my alma mater any time soon.
Don't worry about the picture--I see my husband in a climbing harness like that often (because of his job) and they're even VERY unflattering to guy butts. I think it's worse for girls because ours are softer and have more ability to squeeze out of the harness fitting. Just a guess....
I love vacation pictures! looks like a great time!!!!
What a great mom you are. Star wars, rock climbing, fishing tourney...you did it all!
Ok, I left this really great comment on here this morning, and now it's gone! I'm not sure what happened. Anyway, I'll try again...
I'm glad your having a (mostly) great trip! I have to say I have missed you though! I love your witty and real "take" on life. I'm so glad that you told Z that the stuff "looked real" and restored the magic for him. It makes me sad that they can get dissillusioned at such a young age. I'm all for letting them have their childhood fantasies. Annie totally thinks Dora is real and that someday we'll go visit her house. I love that innocence! And that last pic, LOL! Sweetie, I love ya even more just for posting that pic! See ya soon!
It's about time I stopped by your blog since we have the same name! :-) I always see your comment on Big Mama's blog and think, "I haven't left a comment yet."
I love your blog.
We have other things in common besides our name being spelled the same. I also am addicted to coffee and reality tv!
My mouth was a-watterin' after your talk about Uncle Julios and La Madeleines. Two of my favs when I hit TX. I can feel your pain about the college campus tour. When we drive by Baylor we point it out, but we haven't stopped yet to take our stroll down memory lane - maybe we'll wait a few more years :-) All in all, it sounds like ya'll have a fun time! Glad you're back.
Hi! I stopped by via Kitty's blog and wanted to say Hello! I too have some Star Wars fanATICS too! And I am married to a Finance guy, so I can totally relate to your husbands "Dan't spend any money" mantra. If the budget is on for the month, the hubby is happy that all of his little ducks are in a row! Anyway, it is nice to "meet" you!
Trying to get caught up....sounds like ya'll had a great time. I recognized TCU. I live in Texas (north of Dallas) and TCU is where my son's academic compeetition was held earlier this year. I got pics of that horned toad. The campus was beautiful!
