How old is yours?

A sweet, sweet friend gave me a starter of Amish Friendship Bread. She was lamenting about how her bread doesn't seem to rise as well as her neighbor's. I thought her problem might be related to her baking powder.

She went to her pantry to check the expiration of her powder. May 1996!! After a good laugh, I decided to check mine before I ruined this yummy bread.

JUNE 1997.

Eleven years ago we were moving home from Texas to start our careers. We had been married for 1 year and 7 months. We were 4 years from the birth of our first child.

Bill Clinton was President and relatively scandal-free. I just had surgery to remove my spleen and was recouping in our new house.

I weighed a good 20 pounds less than what I do now, and my skinny jeans were just that. I could eat what I wanted and it didn't seem to matter. Skip and I could also go to movies on a whim and I read about 5 books per week.

We just got our second dog and they were our babies. Life was devoted to making them happy.

Eleven years. So many years, so little need for baking powder.

I am dying of curiosity. How old is your baking powder?

Really. Go check.

Baking Powder? What do you even use that stuff for anyway? :-)

Oh my. That is funny! And if I had any baking powder, I would go check! I buy my bread at the bakery outlet! And I buy all my cookies in plastic containers. :)

August 2009! We bake a lot of cookies around here! :-)

(What a great idea for a post!)

Well, I headed into the pantry to check, all puffed up with pride, just KNOWING that my baking powder isn't old. I mean, I bake all the time and I know you've got to have the freshest baking powder. "Best if used by January 2008" I'm crushed. Thanks for a Sunday morning mini-sermon on PRIDE. LOL!

Oh my, I'm scared to look...

MARCH 97!

ACK!

Okay, so that is just CRAZY! I am adding baking powder to my list ASAP!

I mean SERIOUSLY, we weren't even married yet! Not even engaged! We'd been dating for two years and Jason had JUST moved to his own house in the "big" city. It was quite the bachelor pad. I'm guessing the bachelors never used it, and then it made it's way to our new home 2 years later. YIKES!

Very funny Janelle. And what a clever post!

I'm at my parents, so I decided to check their pantry. Aug 2007!

I agree with the masses, this was a fun and creative post. It was fun to take a stroll down memory lane with you.

I was purty cocky when I read that post, thinking yea, I'll go check. *sheepishly hanging her head* October 2005 - and I might mention I have the 1 pound 6 oz size. When exactly did I think I would use over 1 pounds of baking powder?? That is too funny. It seems to still work though, so by golly, I think I'll keep it until about 2020 or so!

Ha,Ha, I went to my cabinet just knowing my baking powder would be up to date. I thought I would comment and the readers would think I was a goody-goody betty crocker mom. Well, uh, mine was best used by May 2004. How did that happen? Josh and I had just moved to the duplex in B-town while our house was being built. I have been humbled.

I thought for sure mine would be old...really old, but it was March 2007. Maybe I replaced it after our last move? But I'm wondering? Can baking powder really go bad?

This post is soooooo funny!

I have to admit: I know that my baking powder isn't very old b/c there was a recent discussion in my house about baking SODA & baking POWDER not being the same thing. One call to Grandma later, we were off to the store to buy baking soda.

But---I know what you mean about looking in the pantry & you may have moved something from your 3 previous addresses, rarely needing, and looking up: whoops, it's expired.
Just so you know: canned cake frosting can expire. I had no idea until opening a can & thinking "what in the world happened here!!??"

:)

This is so funny because I randomly checked mine *last week* and, um, August 2006!

Which was the month I realized that even though kids under 2 can fly for free if they sit on your lap, it's really not a good idea when your extra-tall almost-2 year old is squirmy and the flight is full.

Ok, so maybe my baked goods were turn out better if mine didn't expire in 2003!! Yikes!! And I hope you're impressed as I had to dig through a box to find it since we're moving! :-)

What a FUN post!!! Loved it!!!h
Oh how I wish I were home to check my baking powder...

I have a family member with spices in her pantry that are literally 30 and 40 years old. I am not exaggerating. I always have so much fun looking at everything. Surely they can't have any flavor after that long!!!

I haven't had the chance to look at mine, but I'm pretty sure it hasn't expired b/c I just bought it not long ago. It has been funny to read everyone's comments. :o)

I bake. Alot. I just bought a new one.

BUT, there are some spices in my cabinet that are so old their labels look like they're from the 70's. My grandparents gave us some before we got married. I seriously think they are 20 years old.

June 1997...I was falling in love with Jason. Sigh...
